Return to rural? Several factors at play when residents leave, return, (Farm Futures 5/27)

Reasons for returning – or not returning – to rural communities once young people have left their home cities and towns are varied, but USDA researchers have found that family involvement and child-rearing considerations surface as key drivers in both situations... In a new report, "Factors affecting former residents' returning to rural communities," USDA Economic Research Service researchers conducted about 300 interviews at high school reunions in 21 rural communities to determine reasons for leaving or coming back to rural communities. EPA Office of Sustainable Communities Offers Two New Economic Development Resources for Small Towns and Cities
How can small towns and cities adapt to changing conditions that affect the industries, technologies, and land use patterns that form the foundation of their local economies?  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new report provides case studies of seven communities that have successfully reinvigorated their struggling economies by emphasizing existing assets and distinctive resources.  The report, How Small Towns and Cities Can Use Local Assets to Rebuild Their Economies: Lessons from Successful Places, draws on these case studies to offer strategies other communities can use.  Two stories in here from towns of 2,900 and 12,000 population

N4A Releases Report on Livable Communities for All Ages
The National Association for Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) has recently released a report on livable communities for all ages.  The report highlights local best practices from across the country, provides an overview of ways to help the elderly remain independent and engaged, and serves as a guide for local governments to transform their communities to support aging in place.  Click here to read the full report.

During these webinars, Seven Sisters will examine elements of successful partnerships with Native organizations, looking at cultural differences, history and the issue of sovereignty. The webinars will then explore how that understanding leads to effective and lasting partnerships.

These webinars are designed for non-Native organizations, including nonprofits; financial institutions; philanthropic entities; and federal, state and local government agencies that are looking to develop or strengthen partnerships with Native organizations.

Rural Childhood Poverty Gap Widens

A growing female presence among rural veterans is likely to continue

The demographics of rural veterans are shifting as newly separated cohorts of younger veterans replace older veterans, and an increasing number of women serve and retire from the military. Since the change from a conscription-based military to an all-volunteer force in 1973, the presence of women in the military has grown from less than 2 percent of active duty personnel to more than 14 percent; as a result, the share of female veterans has steadily increased. In rural (nonmetro) counties, their share more than doubled from the end of Gulf War I (1990-1991) to the present, rising from 3.0 percent in 1992 to 6.3 percent in 2013. Over 40 percent of rural female veterans served during Gulf Wars I and II (2003-2011), compared with less than 5 percent of rural male veterans, reflecting a more youthful rural female veteran population. In 2013, 55 percent of rural female veterans were under the age of 55 compared to 26 percent of rural male veterans. Impact Makers Gifts Company to the Community

Impact Makers has gifted the company's equity ownership to two nonprofit organizations, The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia and Virginia Community Capital. The company took this action, a first amongst social enterprises, in order to preserve and grow its philanthropic mission. The gift also is helping enable The Community Foundation (TCF) and Virginia Community Capital (VCC) to create funds that support charities and invest in B Corps and other companies with a social mission. A free tool to assess how your collaboration is doing on 20 research-tested success factors. ​The inventory takes about fifteen minutes to complete. It can be distributed to a small group of leaders in the collaborative, during a general meeting, or via mail to all members for the most complete picture. You can tally your score manually or online.  This tool can be used for stakeholders and partners to assess the effectiveness of their own work group, or the effectiveness of collaboration in their community at large. Take the free online inventory, or register your group to take the online inventory, and receive the group's summary scores for each of the 20 factors. This tool is the result of research regarding factors that contribute to successful collaborations. New HUD-CPD Cross-Program Funding Matrix and Dashboard Reports Posted

These reports provide funding information for each city and state that receives CPD program funds, in a place-based format. The reports detail the size of each grant received over the past several years, as well as the total amount of funds currently available to be spent on affordable housing and community and economic development activities. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the FY '15 notice of grant opportunity for the Program for Investment in Microentrepreneurs (PRIME). Proposals are due June 29th. The purpose of PRIME is to fund private, non-profit microenterprise development organizations; microenterprise development programs run by State/Local/Tribal Governments; or Indian tribes interested in providing assistance and guidance to disadvantaged microentrepreneurs and/or microenterprise development organizations for the purposes stated in this Announcement. Up to $5,000,000 in funding is available for this program in FY 2015.
