WEBINAR: Persistent & Emerging Issues In Rural Education: Insights from Recent Economics of Education Research, March 9, 2015 @ 11:00 AM - Eastern Time

This presentation provides an overview of some persisting issues in rural education as well as a discussion of emerging topics, with particular attention on teacher labor markets and education finance. Recent research on some persisting issues, such as teacher pay and recruitment and the political economy of school financing will be discussed. The presenter will also distill the implications that emerging trends in teacher performance measurement, teacher compensation reform (e.g. Federal and State support for Pay-for-Performance contracts), recruitment/retention policy (e.g. challenges to seniority based retention) and alternative licensing pathways have for rural school success.

About the Speakers:  Elton Mykerezi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Economics and Extension Economist with the Center for Community Vitality at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He Holds a PhD in Economics from Virginia Tech. Mykerezi's research focuses on the study of human capital and labor markets; economics of poverty, food insecurity and poor nutrition; rural business and labor market development. His Extension and outreach efforts aim to improve economic opportunities for vulnerable populations, by focusing primarily on access to healthy foods, a quality education and opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment. He also teaches a graduate Regional Economics course.
